Dubai Introduces Four-Day Workweek for Government Staff During Summer

Officially launching its “Our Flexible Summer” pilot in 2025, Dubai has significantly changed work culture. From July 1 to September 30, some government employees will adopt a four-day working week—Monday to Thursday—with an off day on Friday and working hours restricted to 7–8 hours daily, depending on organizational groups.

How the Schedule Works

  • Group A: Works 8 hours, from Monday through Thursday, and enjoys a weekend on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
  • Group B: Works 7 hours Monday through Thursday, takes half a day on Friday, then enjoys Saturday and Sunday off.

This flexible scheduling applies to 15 government entities as per the larger Dubai Government Human Resources Department (DGHR) initiative.

The Why This Matters Now

Improved Work-Life Balance

This test will build on the tests already conducted, giving employees more personal time, especially in the sweltering summer. DGHR Director-General Abdullah Al Falasi has pointed out its advantages for wellbeing and safety.

Increased Efficiency & Cost Savings

The year 2024 has shown an enhancement of productivity and energy saving, convincing DGHR to upscale the application of the program in 2025.

Leading Regionally

Dubai consistently remained in the news for innovations, after similar regional efforts, like Sharjah, which started full four-day week in 2022.

What This Means for Dubai and Not Just Dubai

  • For Public Services: Performance is high even with fewer working days—key departments remain open and accessible during the pilot.
  • For the Economy: More leisure would benefit tourism, retail, and hospitality sectors across the city. Experts see a flow effect.
  • For Policy Making: DGHR will be monitoring outcomes very carefully—productivity, employee satisfaction, resource use—to see if there is a case for extending this model into the subsequent summers or even for an entire year.

The summer four-day workweek pilot for the year 2025 in Dubai is a bold move toward flexible, employee-centered governance. This grid of adaptive schedules is not just about shorter weeks; it is about smart working, better living, and resource efficiency. As this project runs until September 30, all eyes will be on its outcomes—and the possibilities for larger transformation.
