Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi has been pleaded to be among the best specimens of modern Islamic architecture around the globe. It is a resounding symbol of the message of tolerance, unity, and spirituality out to the world by the UAE. The mosque, which was established under the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the UAE, acts as a place of worship and a bridge between cultures, receiving millions each year through its portals, regardless of the differences in faith.
With its shining white marble domes, reflective pools descended into ready the artistry of the place, this architectural wonder is, in itself, an expression of awe filled with traditional craftsmanship and modernization, leaving every visitor in great wonder on entering.
It covers an area of 30 acres and can accommodate over 40,000 worshippers. Thus, it is one of the largest mosques in the world. The 82 domes; 1,000 columns; and four towering colossal minarets rise elegantly to kiss the skies, reflecting an eclectic medley of the Mamluk, Ottoman, and Fatimid architectural styles. Wherever one may look, white marble symbolizes purity and peace, while the walls and courtyards are embellished with inlaid floral mosaics and Qur'anic inscriptions. More than 3,000 artisans from around the world participated in the construction of this mosque, merging art from Italy, India, and Morocco, among others.
Sitting above the main prayer hall is the world's largest hand-knotted carpet, produced by the hands of some 1,200 artisans from Iran. It covers an area of over 5,600 sq. meters and excites the imagination with intricate Islamic patterns that through art express devotion.
Indoors, visitors are dazzled by seven scintillating chandeliers rendered out of pure Swarovski crystals, with the largest of them weighing over 12 tons. All chandeliers are breathtaking amalgams of gold, brass, and crystal, and invoke, without fail, a gasp from the auditorium. Outside, the mosque's external light subtly switches hues in the night to reflect different phases of the moon, bathed in a calm glow of blue — a sight enchanting enough to mesmerize every visitor.
Free cultural guided tours.
The mosque organizes free guided tours in which visitors are educated about Islamic traditions, Emirati heritage, and the mosque's design philosophy by culturally trained guides. The 45-minute to one-hour tours are conducted in both English and Arabic.
Equipped with such knowledge, visitors would begin to appreciate better the values of peace, respect, and coexistence that the mosque espouses. With some exceptions, the guests are free to take responsible pictures of the monument at most places.
Since the mosque is an active place of worship, modest dress is observed:
For the women, heads, hands, and legs must be covered (abayas available at the entrance).
Men have to wear long pants avoiding sleeveless outfits.
While entering the prayer halls, one is to remove shoes.
Visitors are encouraged to maintain decorum and civility in accordance with the sanctity and spiritual environment of the mosque.
The entire site has been made wheelchair-friendly and family-friendly for everyone's enjoyment.
Its reflective pools, floral marble courtyard, and symmetrical arches seem to draw attention. Sunset tours are quite popular, providing opportunities for sunset photography of the mosque in soft golden light while dusk embraces darker blue hues.
Night shooting will, of course, be illuminated by the domes and minarets, instantly making this one of the most recognized skylines in Abu Dhabi. An absolute must-see for any traveler and photography enthusiast.
