Al Ain Oasis & Jebel Hafeet Mountain Drive

Explore Abu Dhabi's Green Heart

Al Ain, the garden town and UNESCO World Heritage site, along with its oasis and Jebel Hafeet Mountain, is the perfect meeting ground for nature, history, and adventure. Ancient irrigation systems feeding lush palm groves, spectacular mountain scenery, and desert views stand witness to the great diversity within the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

Also called the “City of Oases”, Al Ain, one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements on Earth, is where Emirati heritage flourishes — green oases, archaeological sites, forts, and the imposing presence of Jebel Hafeet, Abu Dhabi’s tallest mountain.

Al Ain Oasis: A Living Heritage Site

  • The Lush Green Oasis Spread over an area of 1,200 hectares, Al Ain Oasis is a tranquil escape dotted with more than 147,000 date palms and various fruit trees, nourished through an ancient irrigation system called Falaj. This system is UNESCO recognized for channeling underground water to keep the oasis alive: a testament to sustainable agriculture in the desert. There are pathways along which visitors can either walk or cycle through the cool shade of galloping palm fronds and birdsong. An oasis still makes a refreshing break from the desert, which is a must-see for anyone in Al Ain.
  • Eco-Centre & Cultural Experience At the entrance, the Eco-Centre introduces guests to the history, ecology, and cultural significance of the oasis. Interactive shows explain how local communities relied upon the ancient irrigation system called Falaj for thousands of years, signaling the UAE's commitment to sustainability long before the term was even coined in modern times. Guest tours also include viewing little farms, traditional mud-brick houses, and cultural trails that demonstrate the ancient way of life of Emirati agriculture. Guided tours and educational programs are available for guests who want to learn more about the ecosystem of the oasis.
  • Cycling & Nature Trails The pump of adrenaline is all set with bicycle hire to whizz past under enormous advertising palms along well-marked trails. The serene setting and spectacular scenery are perfect for a family day out, picnic, or simply a good photo-op.

Jebel Hafeet Mountain Drive: Abu Dhabi's Pretty Wonder

One of the most scenic natural attractions in the UAE is Jebel Hafeet, rising to 1,249 meters above sea level. At the same time, the meandering mountain road, often listed amongst the best drives in the world, ascends to incredible panoramic views over the city of Al Ain, the desert, and the border with Oman.

The drive is about 11.7 km long and consists of 60 hairpin turns on well-maintained tarmac -- a treat indeed for both drivers and cyclists, with view platforms, picnic areas, and phography opportunities dotting the trail, with amazing views of the dramatic rock formations of the mountain.

  • As a Summit Viewpoint After arriving at the peak, visitors are rewarded with magnificent 360-degree views of the surrounding landscape. Al Ain's green patches mixing with the golden desert dunes create an unforgettable vision, especially at sunrise or sunset when the pretty light casts magic hues over the landscape.
  • Jebel Hafeet Hot Springs (Green Mubazzarah) At the foothills of the mountain rests the Green Mubazzarah, which is like a park filled with natural hot springs as well as some man-made ones. The warm mineral-rich water is believed to be soothing and therapeutic. Meanwhile, picnic lawns, playgrounds, and barbecues provide families' fun areas as couples relax in shaded spots by the spring.
  • Hiking & Outdoor Activities For the thrill-seekers, Jebel Hafeet presents hiking trails and mountain biking routes along with rocks that make great scenery for photography. If anyone is interested in visiting the archaeological sites, which include ancient tombs from more than 5000 years ago, guided tours are available.
